Celebrating the Quilt Holidays ~ Count Your Buttons Day

Did you know that all year long there are special days set aside on the calendar to commemorate  quilts, quilting, quilters and quilt-related activities? The are known as the Quilt Holidays and here at Whimzie Quiltz we celebrate each one… Let’s party!

As October 21st got closer and closer, I was thinking Count Your Buttons Day sure seems like a fun quilt holiday to celebrate. Then I realized you actually have to count those silly little things! And when you have as many as I do, it can take quite a while.

Still, since I did take the time to count them, I thought I’d do a little contest over on Facebook to see in anyone can guess how many pink and orange buttons I own.

The person who guesses closest (or a random winner if more than one person gets it right) will receive this sarcastic “Buttons are the only thing keeping shit together around here” wine wrap! (Bottle of Rosé not included 😦 unfortunately)

And as a thank you for reading my blog, here’s a hint ~

there’s more than 1200, but less than 1300.

The winner will be announced in a Facebook post on the morning of October 22, 2019. Good luck guessing!

Celebrating the Quilt Holidays ~ Sewing Machine Day

Yeah, I have NO idea how one celebrates Thread the Needle Day exactly, so I’m dying to know if there’s something special you are doing to observe today… share your needle-threading commemorative activities in the comments!

15th Anniversary Whimzie Quiltz BOM ~ July

To celebrate 15 years in business, I’m making a quilt ~ and setting aside the 15th day of each month to work on the 15th Anniversary Whimzie Quiltz BOM commemorative project.

Happy July! This month’s tape measure block is a bit different from the 15th anniversary quilt blocks I’ve created so far (January, February, March, April, May/June) – the tape measure itself has no background fabric, which means it’s really going to stand out when the entire quilt top gets put together…

Since there’s going to be such a focus on this element of the pattern, I wanted to make the block out of a very special fabric.

When I first repurposed a guest room into a sewing space, back before Whimzie Quiltz was even a glimmer in my eye, my colors were sky blue and orange – and this ditsy floral is the very fabric I used to cover my first sewing room chair. The chair, which was a hand-me-down, eventually bit the dust, but I saved the fabric, hoping for a meaningful project to eventually come along that it would be perfect for. And look what happened!

I am now more than half way done with the blocks for this quilt and it’s starting to feel real. Maybe it’s a quilting thing, but sometimes when you are focused on so many individual blocks, you don’t get a feel for the way the finished piece will look until far along in the process. It can be unnerving! But I’ve completed enough now that that feeling is subsiding and I’m getting more and more excited. Can’t wait for August!

I really hope you’re enjoying taking the 15th Anniversary Whimzie Quilt journey with me. And remember, there’s still plenty of days each month when I can be working on a super special quilt for you, too! What do you want to celebrate in 2019?

15th Anniversary Whimzie Quiltz BOM ~ June (and May)

To celebrate 15 years in business, I’m making a quilt ~ and setting aside the 15th day of each month to work on the 15th Anniversary Whimzie Quiltz BOM commemorative project.

Best laid plans of mice and quilters – I missed the chance to work on my 15th anniversary quilt in May! Can’t for the life of me remember what came up, but something did, and I wasn’t able to get in the sewing room.

So when June 15th rolled around, I was – for sure – not going to miss a second month in row. By 8 AM, I was hip deep in fabric, working on TWO sections – the iron and the rotary cutter/needle combination. And, while it took all day, I finally caught up with the blocks in my block of the month (BOM) quilt!

If you notice, though, I’m writing this post on June 27 – 12 days after I finished the blocks. Well, there’s a reason. I was unhappy with the pink diamond fabric I chose for the iron. So I redid it. Which made me unhappy with the fabric I used on the seam ripper back in April (you can see a bit of the old seam ripper fabric at the top left of the picture.) So I redid that too! It’s been a whole thing.

Still, everything is caught up now and I’m finally ready for the 7th block next month… see you in July!

I really hope you’re enjoying taking the 15th Anniversary Whimzie Quilt journey with me. And remember, there’s still plenty of days each month when I can be working on a super special quilt for you, too! What do you want to celebrate in 2019?
