Happy Summer Everyone! It’s super hot and humid – what better time to talk quilts, right? Wouldn’t you rather be at the beach? How about combining both like this little Lego quilter ironing fabric on her surfboard?☺
You’d think quilting and the beach wouldn’t have anything in common, but custom quilt orders sure seem to come in “waves” around here…
2013 started off with swell of photo memory quilts; then I had a surge of pillows and quilts with sports themes. Now I’ve got a tsunami of Star Trek related projects coming up, including a Star Trek: Voyager quilt, a Star Trek: Wrath of Khan quilt and a Star Trek baby quilt.
I’ve also started a line of Star Trek: The Next Generation tablet and e-reader covers over at
The CompQCover Collection store. As Jean-Luc Picard says, “Make it sew!”
The Latest Wave in Fabric – Licensing
Licensed fabrics include copyrighted images, but the organization owning the copyright has allowed its use. When I started Whimzie Quiltz, I was reluctant to recommend using licensed fabrics in quilts because the quality was so poor. Seriously, I once purchased some Dodgers fabric (on Ebay) that you could see through!
But several well-known quilt fabric manufacturers, including Sykel and Camelot Cottons, are making some high quality fabrics that I’m LOVING working with – really cool designs.
For instance, these pink college fabrics were featured in customer Amy F.’s recent quilt and I snapped up 4 yards of the Trek fabric to make a quilt for my husband (forgot to include that one in the tsunami of sci-fi quilt orders.) And the Man of Steel fabric is making some “super” quilted checkerboards that will be available in my Etsy store soon.
If you’ve always wanted a quilt that features a beloved character, there’s no better time
to order one. Ask me if your favorite is on the market or check out some of these fun licensedfabrics available today:
Warmest wishes this hot summer season,
